Kwik Sew 2777 #6

Monday, April 18, 2005

You may have noticed that there were several projects languishing on the WIP list for quite some time. One was a shirt for DH, which he had been hinting about quite a bit of late. This one was to be made of a seersucker, and he deemed that it should be a short sleeved shirt, the fabric being too heavy for long sleeves.

Yesterday after church I finally cleared out enough that I could sew it up.

I had altered the pattern--but never made a shirt--based on some advice from David Page Coffin on the PatternReview "Men's Shirt Sew Along" Message board. DPC had suggested that I narrow the shoulders and shorten the yoke like this:

I did those things, but was a little unsure about the sleeves. I had shortened the yoke by 2 inches, and that length had to go somewhere. I added it to the sleeve length--which seemed logical for a long sleeved shirt. On a short sleeved shirt, however, there's no place to put 2 more inches in length. It *seemed to me* that it should go into the sleeve cap.

I think you can see by the way the sleeves kick out, that some of the length should have gone into the sleeve cap. Probably not all, because the shirt wouldn't be nearly as wearable. Wearable is most important--especially to DH ;)

The difference in the fit of the shirt is remarkable. I think it makes him look much more neat and trim--always a plus!
