This was my second vintage machine. After reviewing web pages for some time, I decided to look for this specific model--I suppose it had a large "cuteness" factor. Finally, I found 3 at one antique store. Two of the three followed me home.

This 99 came almost complete. It had everything, including kneebar and manual, but its slide plate was missing. After I saw how they go on and come off, I know why it was missing. If you don't know how, it's nearly impossible to replace it.

With a little help from my father-in-law, I finally got it working. He showed me where the lube tubes on the motor were, helped me with the wiring, and figured out how to replace the check spring. Since I had removed and cleaned every removable part, I was delighted when it actually sewed. Luckily, the other 99 that I bought served as a reference for where to put the parts I could not figure out.

To clean the parts, I used WD-40 and fine steel wool (and tooth picks, toothbrushes, swabs, and anything else I could find). Some Tuff Stuff and chrome polish were useful on the paint and shiny parts.

The 99-13 has an unmarked tension adjustment, and an unmarked stitch-length adjustment knob. The stitch length adjustment is located on the lower right above the Singer oval. To lengthen the stitch, turn the knob to the right. To shorten, turn to the left. Forget "Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey" for this machine! The 99-13 has a really neat bobbin winder, with an "arm" which guides the thread back and forth across the width of the bobbin. It's fun to watch it!
